The Poinsettia is a classic symbol of the Christmas season, admired for its bright red and green foliage. Yet many people struggle to keep their Poinsettia plants healthy beyond the holiday period. These beautiful plants can lose their colour and drop leaves quickly if not cared for properly. With the right approach, you can extend the life of your Poinsettia and enjoy its festive charm well into the new year.

Choose the right spot for your Poinsettia

Poinsettias thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window where it can receive plenty of natural light but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A spot with consistent temperature between 18°C to 24°C is ideal. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, heaters, or fireplaces, as sudden temperature changes stress the plant and cause leaf drop.

Water carefully to avoid overwatering

Watering is one of the most common reasons poinsettias suffer. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom, which can lead to root rot. After watering, allow excess water to drain away and never let the plant sit in standing water.

Maintain humidity and avoid dry air

Poinsettias prefer moderate humidity levels. During winter, indoor heating can dry out the air, causing the leaves to brown and drop. To increase humidity, place a shallow tray filled with water and pebbles near the plant or use a humidifier. Misting the leaves occasionally can also help, but avoid soaking the foliage.

Feed your Poinsettia for longer-lasting colour

Fertilize your poinsettia every 4 to 6 weeks with a balanced, all-purpose houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Feeding helps maintain the plant’s vigour and supports the bright colour of the bracts. Stop fertilizing once the plant finishes blooming and enters dormancy.

Prune and repot to encourage growth

After the Christmas season, prune your poinsettia back to about 6 inches to encourage new growth. This helps the plant stay compact and healthy. If the plant has outgrown its pot, repot it in fresh soil during spring. Use a well-draining potting mix designed for houseplants.

Tips for keeping Poinsettias year-round

If you want to enjoy your Poinsettia beyond the holidays, you can try to re-bloom it for the next Christmas. Starting in early October, give the plant 14 hours of complete darkness each night for about 8 weeks. During the day, provide bright indirect light. This process triggers the plant to produce its colourful bracts again.
